Science

Intention

In line with our school ethos, our science curriculum encourages all children to be the best that they can be. We believe that our curriculum supports all children to make good progress from their starting points. Our curriculum is designed to help the children explore, appreciate and understand the environment and the wider world which we live in and how it has evolved. We ensure that our children are provided with opportunities which stimulate their curiosity and provokes and answers questions about the natural and human worlds. Our children are taught the knowledge and skills outlined in the National Curriculum, with a clear route of progression through the school. Our children are offered a range of activities that all contribute to developing their skills of enquiry, working scientifically, thinking and decision making, investigation and communication. Our children are responsible for their own learning and aspiring to challenge themselves in all areas of the science curriculum.

Implementation

  • Children have access to a range of high quality resources to develop their knowledge and understanding.
  • Engaging educational trips and visitors are planned to enhance our curriculum.
  • Science talk is promoted within the classroom which enables children to become inquisitive learners.
  • Teachers plan opportunities to build on prior knowledge by revisiting previously taught concepts in a range of interesting ways.
  • Learning is scaffolded to support and challenge all learners to make progress from their starting points, including those with special educational needs and disabilities.

Impact

  • Our children will demonstrate a love of science and an interest in the wider world.
  • As they progress through the school, our children will become more confident to use a wider range of scientific vocabulary.
  • Our children will be curious about the world around them and ask meaningful questions which deepen their knowledge and understanding.
  • Most children will achieve age related expectations in science at the end of each academic year.
