Our topic this term is the Anglo-Saxons!
Our main topic learning this term will investigate the lives of people from the Anglo-Saxon period. We will explore this through research, role play and questioning, from the end of the Roman era until the Norman invasion in 1066. We will be investigating Anglo-Saxon daily life and finding out where the invaders came from and how they changed Britain. We will visit West Stow Anglo-Saxon visit to get a real taste of what village life might have been like.
English
We will write a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts related to their learning in this area, including chronological reports and recounts. To begin with, our book study will briefly focus on the non-fiction text ‘How to be an Anglo-Saxon in 13 easy stages’ before moving onto ‘Anglo Saxon Boy’ by Tony Bradman. The children will be reading the books in reading sessions and completing a range of linked writing tasks. Throughout the first half term, the children will focus on grammar skills building up to write their own non-chronological and adventure story. We will then move on to read ‘Beowulf’ by Michael Morpurgo during which, we will be writing a newspaper report.
Spellings will be learnt in classes and pupils will practise using a range of activities across the week.
Maths
In this term, we will cover place value, all four operations and measures (including length and perimeter) through a variety of activities linking to our topic work where it is
appropriate. Links to our maths work will also be made across other curriculum areas to allow children to show the ways in which they can use their maths skills. In Year 4, we will continue to build on previous times tables knowledge in class with a variety of games as it is important, they rapidly recall these up to the 12x tables. We will begin practising regularly for the Multiplication check that will take place in the summer term. Children can still also access Times Tables Rock Stars, using their own usernames and passwords, to allow for additional practise at home.

Home Learning
The home learning grid has been sent home to pick one activity to do per week. Paper copies of each resource are also available in a resource box found in both year 4 classrooms, along with lined, squared or plain paper. Home learning is due every Friday and will be monitored each week by your child's class teacher. Please make sure your child's home learning has their name on it. Pupils need to stick it in their home learning book when they bring the piece of learning to school.
Home learning club is on a Tuesday lunchtime in a Y3 classroom for children who would like to complete it in school or are struggling to complete it at home and need some help. As always, if your child is struggling with completing their home learning or they have any questions, they should not hesitate to speak to their class teacher.

- We have regular Class Council meetings.
- Each week, we have time for 'collective worship' where, as a class, we discuss and learn together about the world and also thought-provoking questions.
