SUMMER HOLIDAY Monday 24th July 2017

Hello Year 5!

Welcome to our homepage! We hope that this helps you find out a little more about what is going on in school!

Our Topic learning this term is Ancient Egypt.

Summer Term

This term in literacy we will be finishing reading 'Kensuke's Kingdom' and beginning our study of fairytales.

In Maths we will be looking at shape, space and measure.

Spring Term

This term we have enjoyed learning all about space. We found out lots of information about space, writing a information text about Tim Peake. In our DT learning we investigated what food would be suitable for space travel, completing a space menu for Tim Peake.

In literacy this term we studied Michael Morpurgo's 'Kensukes's Kingdom'. We have been reading about Michael's adventures on the Peggy Sue, and have created and performed poems about a stormy sea.

In our Maths lessons we learnt all about fractions, decimals and percentages.

Autumn Term

What a busy Autumn term!

In literacy we studied Roald Dahl and his book 'Danny Champion of the World!' During this study we wrote a biography about Roald Dahl and found out lots of interesting facts, celebrating his 100th birthday!

We also studied the Hunchback of Notre Dame and put ourselves in the characters shoes, writing detailed diary entries.

During our Maths lessons we have developed our knowledge of the key Mathematical skills; place value, roman numerals, rounding, addition and subtraction.

In week 4 we learnt about road safety, and some of us passed our Bike Ability test. It was great fun and we had many discussions on how to stay safe as pedestrians, cyclists and road users.

In our Topic lessons we learnt all about Bury St. Edmunds and have visited the Cathedral. We also developed our map reading skills and completed an orienteering task around the school.

This week we have started our new literacy topic- Fairy tales.

Miss Southgate's class have enjoyed investigating different fairy tales and have performed a fairy tale to the class.

Here are some pictures of our fabulous performances.

Have you received a house point yet?

The tokens are adding up and remember that weekly mathletics certificates add to the house point total as well.

The house with the most tokens/points at the end of the term will win the privilage of having a non-uniform day and can celebrate by proudly wearing something in their house colours!

Who will it be?  Oak?  Beech?  Birch?  Chestnut?  Willow?  Maple?

Congratulations Oak for earning the most Mathletics points!

Miss Southgate's class have been investigating different mechanisms in Design and Technology.

We have investigated pulleys and levers, thinking about when these might be used in Ancient Egypt.

We discovered that the Egyptians use levers to water their crops, and created a shaduf.

Here are some pictures of our investigations...

Not only did we have some fantastic costumes on World Book Day, but we also celebrated by looking at the author Oliver Jeffers. In year five we focused on his book 'The way back home' and wrote a newspaper article based on the story.

Here are some pictures collected throughout the day...

On Friday 9th December some of the girls in Miss Southgate's class decided to hold a bake sale to raise money for Cancer Research. Together they made lots of delicious cakes that were very popular with both pupils and staff! It was a hugely successful event that managed to raise over £65!

WELL DONE GIRLS!!
